March 10 - Daytona Bike Week
Our friendly dock hand, Bill, had told us there would be
lots of food trucks and booths for Bike Week set up just a few blocks away. I had "my mouth set" for a gyro, so
we biked the mile up to the site, rode around found only peppers and onions and
fried chicken. But we did see lots of
cool motorcycles
Bill had also mentioned Hamburger Mary's as a good lunch
spot. The owner lives at the marina and
drives a purple VW Bug with advertising on the side. Danny's always up for a hamburger, so we
stopped there after our unsuccessful gyro search. The building is purple, the front room has
Italian villa scenes on the wall, surrounded by purple paint. In the back is a large room with a stage and
runway. As we were eating, I noticed a
poster advertising drag queen revues Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
nights. Things fell into place! The hamburger was good, Danny ordered a
Caesar Salad with chicken of all things.
He always says you should order the specialty of the restaurant and made
so much fun of me ordering a chicken sandwich at Waffle House. Oh, well, it was an experience.
While we were eating, the marina parts store called to
tell us the y-splitter had come in. They
were about 5 miles away, so we took our first-ever Uber ride. The driver waited while we picked it up, and
took us back. It was as easy as Erin had
told me.
This would be our last day in Daytona, so we went back
downtown where the action was. Bike Week
actually started today, and there was quite a difference in the atmosphere and
crowd since our first trip downtown two days ago. It's so hard to describe - you really need to
be there.
This was one of the most unusual get-ups we saw. The driver looked to be a granddad, toddler behind him, with a helmet at least, a pony in a side car, and a trailer with a drum set pulled behind. Makes you wonder!
Last sunset from Daytona.
On to St. Augustine tomorrow.
