Thursday, September 28 - Touring Downtown Alton

Thursday, September 28 - Touring Downtown Alton

The weather has broken, the free nights are used up (buy 3, get 3 free), so today is the last day we will be in Alton.  We celebrated with scrambles for breakfast at the marina.  Bobbie and Bill joined us and got the last two pieces of the breakfast casserole.  It got thumbs up from them, too.

The seven of us called the casino shuttle - it was a shorter walk to town from there than from the marina.  We had considered eating their buffet lunch which was half price on Thursday, but they wouldn’t let Alex in.  He’s 20, but you have to be 21 to even go in the building.  We took a selfie. In the foyer and walked to town.

This sign startled me.  I have never seen a remote train sign.

Alton was not what you would call a pretty town, but it did have some interesting buildings, and a lot of hills.  We shopped at a thrift shop, a pawn shop, a craft store that was going out of business, and ate lunch at a pie shop.

The sign out front said “General Store” but this was really a caddy no ice cream store.  The wood inside was beautiful.  Gil found out it came from the Exposition in St. Louis.

Bill and Bobbie heard about a meat store, so we all went to investigate.  And all went home with meat.

We all met at the usual place to discuss plans for tomorrow.  Five boats are leaving, Danny was elected to get up early to call the lock to make sure there was no wait.
