Saturday, September 30 - Ellis Grove, IL
Looking back at
Hoppies Marina. This is the last Marina until we get to Paducah, so we
will be anchoring out at least three nights.
We immediately
passed another dredge. Corps of Engineers are busy along here, but
according to Fern, they don’t know what they are doing.
Just a couple of
miles out, we passed some nice homes, the first we have seen in a long
while. I guess they are suburbs of St. Louis.
More weir dams and sand bars. Fern had told us to expect them.
Valmeyer, IL, had
the usual river industry, and large houses on the bluffs.
AND the usual
barges, LOTS of barges, in Bloomsdale, MO.
We have seen so
many places where barges tie up waiting for a tow boat to pick them up. Sometimes
there are old barges on the shore, as in this picture, sometimes tires,
sometimes cribs, and sometimes mooring cells that look like the top of a silo.
Our stop for the
night, at Fern’s recommendation, was at the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam. Just
a few hundred feet from where the Kaskaskia River runs into the Mississippi,
there is a dam. The lockmaster allows boats to tie up on the wall just
below the dam so that’s where we headed with Chrysalis and Two at Sea. A
short while later, Tasteful Traveler pulled in as well. We had not
anchored with them before, so it was good to have a chance to get to know them.
GPS said we were in
Ellis Grove, IL. What a great name!
We had no way to
watch the Georgia - Tennessee football game. Of all the games to
miss! Danny finally found the UT Sports app and was able to connect to
the radio broadcast through it. The first play of the game was an interception
by Georgia, and from that moment everybody along the wall knew we were Georgia
fans! (Georgia won 41-0, in case you missed the game!)
