Sunday, October 1 - A Day on the Mississippi

Sunday, October 1 - A Day on the Mississippi

Looking back at Kaskaskia, we had a better view of the park area.  There was a campground and an RV park.

We passed another dredge, and could even see it shooting the sand to the side of the river.  It didn’t seem like a permanent solution, but then I’m not an engineer.

The water on the Mississippi is frequently rough, and passing a tow makes it even rougher.  You can actually see the swirls of current in the water.

We thought this rock formation on an island in the river was intriguing.  No clue what it is, it just caught our eyes.

On the Tennessee River, tows have 15 barges at the most.  This one on the Mississippi had at least 30, 5 wide and 6 long.  A fellow Looper reported passing a tow with 45 barges - that really blows my mind!

Once again we encounter the Nina and Pinta.  One of the crew had told Danny in Peoria that they were headed for Cape Girardeau, and here they are!  As in St. Louis, there is nothing along the waterfront in the town..  They are missing out on some tourist dollars.
At 2:30, we pulled into Little Diversion Canal, the second anchorage that Fern had recommended.

When the temperature cooled a little, we took a dinghy ride to explore and visit.  Two at Sea and Tasteful Traveler were already anchored when we pulled in, so we went to say hello.   On past them, we saw more evidence of low water, then limbs stuck in a bridge from flood waters.
Back toward the river, three more boats had pulled in behind us.  We chatted with them, too.

Danny grilled salmon for dinner.  Yum!
