Wednesday, July 12 - On to Peterborough
We started the day
with another of the wonderful cheese bagels we bought at Dooher’s Bakery
yesterday. Gil and Debbie came over for a “plan the day” session and we
got ready to leave. Pump outs at this marina are done at your boat.
The dock girls wheeled out the hose, hooked it to our boat and turned it
on. Something went wrong! The hose came off and the girl and our
boat got sprayed. YUCK! I felt sorry for her, she almost
gagged. We hosed off the boat, the second girl finished the pump out, and
we headed out about 9:45, only 45 minute later than the plan.
This was to be a
day of many different landscapes. We started out on the narrow Trent
River, then moved into Rice Lake, then the Otonabee River before pulling in for
the night at the Peterborough Lock Wall.
This part of Canada
is called Cottage Country, and it was immediately evident why it has that
name. We past so many populated areas, some of them pretty densely
populated.
There were lots of
water toys, especially slides and inflatables. This one looked like
Saturn. I would love to see Hudson and Lily and the Cousins on it!
This is beautiful country,
and the house fit the setting perfectly!
Our last picture on
the Trent was a gaggle of geese! Is this enough geese to be a gaggle?
Rice Lake is the
second largest body of water on the Trent system. It was a giant granary in
Indian times and was named for the wild rice that grows around the shores.
It’s a top sport
fishing lake and was saw lots of people doing just that.
There were many
cottages, not extremely scenic, but it looked like people enjoyed their time at
the lake. SCENERY
The Otonabee River
was beautiful.
Barns and pastures.
Pretty
houses.
Interesting houses.
People playing.
We pulled up to the
Peterborough Lock wall just before 4:00 p.m.
(3 PICS)
The locks usually
provide great entertainment. The sightseeing boat had to wait on these
two canoes to come through before it could enter.
The plan was to
bike to dinner and see a little of Peterborough, but the weather didn’t
cooperate. So we ate in and watched the rain.
