Monday, June 26 - On to Oswego
I slept late - what
a surprise - so we didn’t leave Brewerton until late morning. We stopped
to get gas at a marina close to ours where gas was $1.00 less per gallon.
When you are buying 200 gallons, that’s a significant savings!
We cruised on the
Oswego River all day, some on the Erie Canal and some on the Oswego Canal once
it branched off.
These houses just
looked happy.
Another lock!
We went through 23 locks on the Erie Canal and 8 locks on the Oswego Canal, 9
of those today. Danny spotted this
eagle. He just sat there as we drove by him.
All of a sudden we
were in a rainstorm! I don’t know how Danny could see to drive. At
least we were in a straight canal.
Now THIS is what I
thought canal towns would look like. This is Phoenix, NY. In nice
weather local kids hang out by the canal and will go pick up food for
boaters. Nobody was out today!
These pictures were
taken in Fulton, NY. I never get tired of seeing rapids, especially after
the long, straight canals.
This is Pathfinder
Island, made famous by James Fennimore Cooper. Now I need to read the
book.
A pretty
house! It’s been a while since we’ve seen one.
This was the town
dock in Minetto, NY. Looks well tended, doesn’t it? Most of the
villages looked the same way.
And this is the
abandoned power plant or factory - we couldn’t be sure. There are more
power plants on the short Oswego Canal than on the entire Erie Canal.
And then the lock
and dam. The dam was curved which made the waterfall even prettier.
And finally,
Oswego. There are three locks in the town, all very close together, and
two walls where boats can tie up to spend the night.
We had made
reservations at Oswego Marina because only a few of the town wall spaces had
electricity, and we like air conditioners and sleep machines!
Did Alfred
Hitchcock make us all think this many birds are spooky?
