Tuesday, June 27 - Sightseeing in Oswego
A restaurant
breakfast! We rode to downtown Oswego and enjoyed a wonderful breakfast
at Ava’s.
We needed cash, so
used the surcharge-free machine finder on our TVA Credit Union app, and went to
the local Sunoco. Exciting place. On our way back to the boat, we
crossed the bridge between the last two locks in Oswego. It was quite a
view.
A fellow looper at
the marina had told us that the local Rite-Aid was closing and everything was
75% off. Of course we stopped, and the markdown was 90%! Three
pairs of Polarized sunglasses, lots of Command Hooks, and a bunch of assorted
items, $20.00. What a deal!
One of our fellow
loopers had chartered a fishing boat yesterday and caught lots of fish so he
brought us a large package of salmon. Can’t wait to grill it!
Next stop was the
local hardware store to get a screw for Danny’s bicycle. The “luggage
rack” on the back had lost a screw, so we had to repair it to be able to bring
beer back to the boat.
Back at the marina,
this yacht pulled in at the gas dock. Beautiful boat!
Another boat pulled
in next to us, you can see how close we were. Thank goodness this guy was
a good captain!
Mid-afternoon we
took the bikes across the river again, this time to visit the Oswego Historical
Maritime District.
The museum itself
was very interesting, including a replica of a captain’s quarters and two
ship’s lanterns.
Included in the
museum was a WW II tug boat, built to provide transport for the invasion of
Normandy.
The gentleman who
gave us the tour was very knowledgeable, and we thoroughly enjoyed it, even
though the steps were step and narrow! Here we are in the
wheelhouse.
This was the
captain’s quarters. Originally the radio with all its tubes took up 1/3 of this
space.
The engine
room. It was a single engine, 1500 hp, 30-40 feet long. What made
an impression on me was that the engines took two hours to warm up in warm
weather, five hours in cold weather. And there was no reverse. You
had to stop the engines, do something, then restart it in reverse.
Looking across the
river from the museum we could see Fort Ontario. It is open only on the
week-end, so this was our only view.
Loved the view
across the Oswego River to our marina.
The evening clouds
were spectacular.
