Wednesday, May 10 - Exploring Norfolk
The marina is right
downtown so we headed off on the bikes to find breakfast and take in some
sights. Breakfast was at D'Egg Diner, which was almost hidden by
construction.
Mermaids were
everywhere! They are the city's mascot, if that's the right word.
The first one was at the entrance to our marina, the second at the entrance to
the USS Wisconsin. There is one somewhere wearing a military
uniform.
Our plan was to go
to Ft. Norfolk, but on the way we passed the Battleship USS Wisconsin and
decided to tour it instead.
Everything about
this ship was huge! The signs give a good feeling for the immensity.
I didn't get a picture of the sign telling how much food they went through in a
day, I remember several hundred dozen eggs a day.
This picture was
taken from the bow of the ship, there are seven levels above this. Look
how little the people on the dock appear.
A few pictures
showing the size, and of course I had to take a picture of the kitchen.
We had made
arrangements with a boat yard across the river to change the oil in all three
engines and they wanted us there at 1:00. So we cast off and headed for
Portsmouth. This boat was at the dock when we pulled in.
Now they say they can't get to our boat until tomorrow, so we unloaded the bikes and rode to the Tourist Center. The information they gave us talked about the number of historic houses and we rode to see a few of them. After Savannah, Charleston, Beaufort, and Georgetown, we were not impressed.
On a solemn note, I
got a message that my Aunt Frances in Tifton has been placed in hospice
care. She is the last of the Edwards siblings. This is the hard
part of the boat trip - not being able to travel to family when you want to.
As we relaxed on
the boat with a beer, Danny commented that he hoped we would remember all these
quiet, happy moments. I think we will.
