Saturday, May 13 - Portsmouth to --- Just
Hampton?
Weather looked
better today. Not great, but better. The strongest wind was
predicted for morning hours, so we waited until about 11:00. Leaving
Portsmouth, we passed the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, the oldest continuously
running hospital in the Navy. We saw it on our bike ride, but it looks
larger from the water.
There are 50
military installations in the Hampton Roads, and a lot of them are on the
rivers! This is also a major port, so there are container ships and tons
of containers. Here are a few pictures.
|
This ship in dry dock was at a boat yard in Norfolk. |
|
I have no idea what this is, but it looked interesting. |
|
This house, or building, was in the middle of the river, not connected to anything. |
|
Don't know that I have ever seen a coal pier. This one is monstrous! |

More military vessels. Zoom in for a good look. |
|
Aircraft carriers. Danny counted 4 side by side. |
|
A ship with a more modern design. |
And now we are out
in more open water, and it is ROUGH! I couldn't walk around the boat
even when I held on to rails. We heard later the gusts reached 21
mph. With the open Chesapeake ahead of us, we decided to pull in at
Hampton and wait for better weather. The marina was not scenic, but we
have seen worse.
Our timing was
pretty good, the marina was throwing a party for all tenants and guests.
We enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ chicken, and cookies! Danny
persuaded me to pick up a few extra on our way out for his late night
snack.
