Tuesday April 25 - Georgetown, SC
Winch issues
complicated our departure. The chain kept slipping, so when Danny would
pull some up, it would slip and more would go out that he had pulled in.
Very strenuous work and very frustrating, but he made it.
We saw this
structure on Minim Creek heading toward Georgetown. It looked like a short
fire tower, but was in the middle of a marsh.
The second
interesting structure was a floating swing bridge.
The swing portion
was a pontoon with a roadway. Very interesting, wish we could have seen
it in operation.
We pulled into
Georgetown Marina just after noon, which gave us time for sightseeing.
Georgetown is the
third oldest town in North Carolina, with houses dating back to the 1700's so
there was lots to see! We toured the Maritime Museum and the County
Museum. These christening gowns were incredible!
Next stop was the
Kaminsky House, built in 1769. (It is one of more than 60 antebellum
houses in Georgetown.) We were too late for the tour, but enjoyed walking the
grounds and checking out the trees!
We rode back to the
boat on residential streets so we could see more houses. Every historic
house had a plaque beside its front door with the year it was
constructed. And they were big enough to read from the street! I
could have spent HOURS cruising. The only problem with exploring by
bicycle is that you can't take pictures as you go. This house was right
in front of the marina, so I did get one picture. It was built in the
18th century, but I didn't write down the date so of course don't remember.
This picture of the
back of a boat is for my Healthy Families friends - can you find the name of my
favorite infant toy?
Another sunset
picture, this one from Georgetown.
