I am struggling to
catch up on this blog, so the next several days will be pictures with
captions. Not as much fun, but I am desperate to be "even."
This fishing boat
from New Jersey pulled in to get gas as we were getting ready to leave.
It took 1200 gallons! Glad our tank is smaller, it would really hurt to
shell out that much money for gas all at once.
Southport doesn't
have a place to dock, so we just took pictures as we passed by.
We saw several
loading facilities on the Cape Fear River. The largest munitions facility
in the country is along its banks.
This is the first
car ferry we have seen on our trip. It runs from Southport to Fort Fisher.
I tried to get
pictures of the dredging process as we passed. If you look hard you can
see the progress of the bucket.
This island has no
significance except altitude. It has been a long time since we have seen
anything above sea level.
I have no idea why,
but the water in this section of the river had lots of bubbles.
Wilmington is a
large port facility. We passed several ships and lots of containers.
Our first view of
Wilmington.
We docked at the
city marina, across the river from the USS North Carolina.
We took the bikes
for a quick tour of downtown Wilmington. A column store, really?
When we pulled up
to the dock, we saw something in the water, but couldn't decide if it was a
log, or something else. When we got back from our bike ride it was low
tide and we could see it was a statue of a dolphin. Danny Googled it and
found out it was originally in a children's playground before the renovation of
the waterfront.
Our dock was
directly behind the Hilton, which was set up for a wedding when we
arrived. We had a great time watching the preparations and the wedding
itself. When the guests clapped, Danny blew the boat horn. Hope the
bride appreciated it.
