Wednesday, April 12 - Downtown Savannah!
The marina loaner
car was available at 11:00, so we waited around so we could go to WalMart, my
least favorite store. We had not bought real groceries in quite a while,
so we filled several large bags and spent quite a bit of money!
Our cruising guide
had said the Isle of Hope Marina was in one of the prettiest settings of any on
the Loop. We drove past some of the houses in the car to check them out,
but as we pulled out on the boat, we had a chance to see how pretty they are
from the water. I may bore you, but I just have to post these pictures.
The Intracoastal
Waterway took us past Bonaventure Cemetery, made famous in the movie
"Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." If you look closely,
you can see some markers.
The desire to
cruise through Savannah was one of my top two reasons to travel the
Intracoastal Waterway. I loved it, just wish the cruise had been
longer.
As we got close to
the Savannah River, we saw a large cargo ship headed upstream. We were
able to get in front of him, which made me a little nervous. I was afraid
he would speed up! Then a little closer to town, we passed another ship,
this one coming toward us. You know they are big, but seeing them right
beside you is still overwhelming.
We had visited Ft.
Jackson by land, but this was our first time by sea.
The approach to
Savannah is more industrial than scenic. The first look at town is so
pretty, though.
We pulled into the
River Street Market Place Dock, tied up, and started watching boats!
We did a little sight
seeing by land, too.
Danny wanted steak
for dinner, so we set out for Outback with directions from the Yellow Pages
app. My maps app didn't show it, but Danny was determined. We
finally asked a carriage driver and she said Outback had been taken out by the
hurricane. Nothing else looked good, so we came back to the boat to eat
and watch more boats.
