Friday, April 7 - Leaving St.
Augustine!
Goodbye, Camachee
Cove Marina and St. Augustine. It's been real.
It was awesome to
be back on the water. The brisk wind slowed us down a little, and we had
to leave the windows zipped up, but we loved it! Mid-morning we came up
on several official boats milling around. Our first thought was that they
were stopping boats to inspect them, but then we got close enough to see that
they were US Customs boats. They took off in groups of three, two big
boats and one smaller one. They would pass us, then come back
around. Danny figured that they were practicing pursuing boats. It
was very entertaining!
We saw our first
tug and barge in a long time, and it was a big one!
We passed Pointe
Vedra and saw some beautiful houses and lots of docks.
The wind was so
brisk, there were whitecaps on the narrow river.
The ICW
crosses the St. John's River at Mayport, and that's where we stopped for the
night. Danny's first cousin, Cindy, lives in Jacksonville and this was
close enough that she could drive to see us. (Jacksonville, by the way,
is 21 miles off the Intracoastal)
While waiting for
Cindy to get off work, we were thoroughly entertained by all kinds of
boats. The cruising guide had said Mayport was a busy place, and they
were right. A group of three Navy boats pulled into our marina, a Corps
of Engineers boat parked right beside us, the ferry ran every half hour, cargo
ships and car carriers headed out to sea, and we could see very large Navy
vehicles across the way. A helicopter even flew over. We loved
it!
We enjoyed a
seafood dinner with Cindy and her grandson, Dylan. None of us could
remember when we saw each other last, but it had been a long time!
Thanks to all the
boat traffic I mentioned earlier, we had a very rocky night! A good sleep
aid.
