Wednesday, May 31 - Delaware City

Wednesday, May 31 - Delaware City

Danny cooked biscuits for breakfast!  Canned biscuits, but they were still very good and I was impressed.

The lady at the marina office mentioned last night that they have a golf cart and would give us a ride to town, so we called and our new friend Jack came to pick us up.  Town was only a few blocks away, but Danny's leg has been bothering him since the boat tie-up incident in Oriental and we didn't want to push it.

Delaware City was the original eastern terminus of the C & D Canal, which opened in 1829.   The "new" terminus is now two  miles down river.  Yesterday we saw no large ships on the canal, today three exited the canal as we watched.

Fort Delaware, just offshore on Pea Patch Island, was the North's Andersonville.  Over 32,000 Confederate prisoners of war were housed there.  The ferry to Pea Patch Island runs only on week-ends, so we didn't get to tour the Fort.

We had a great lunch at Lewinsky's Bar, and yes, there was a picture of Bill Clinton on display.

This is a really small town, and we enjoyed visiting the market, the park and walking down the Main Street.  There are many very old houses, too, but without the bikes, we didn't go looking for them.

Back on the boat, Danny took a nap and I used my iPad to catch up on mail and Facebook.  I MISS MY PHONE!

Deb and Gil pulled in mid-afternoon, along with "C-Scape."  We visited on our boat and Danny showed off his zipper pulls, then we went to the "weather meeting."  This time, there was Captain Morgan and Diet Coke waiting for me.  As we were leaving, the captain of "Insandity" invited us to go down to his boat and see and sign the infamous barrels of Jefferson bourbon that are making a commemorative trip from Louisville, KY to New York City on Looper boats.  Of course I went!  He had been given bottles in addition to the kegs so we passed around a glass of each variety.  They also had a Manhattan mix, but it wasn't as good as the straight stuff.  "Ocean" was my favorite.
