Tuesday, June 20 - On to Ilion
Rain has been in
the forecast every day for the past two weeks. We decided if we wait for
no rain, we will spend the entire summer on the Erie Canal. The skies
were cloudy, but we headed out anyway.
This picture of the
canal was taken in German Flatts, NY. I would love to know the story
behind that name.
Our first day
traveling on the canal we went through 9 locks. The second day 7
locks. Today’s ten mile stretch had only one lock. We stopped at
Ilion because it is the only stop with electricity until we get to Sylvan
Beach, and Sylvan Beach is full.
The clouds were
impressive as we pulled in, but it didn’t rain until much later in the
day.
This is pumping
out. Most marinas have a pump-out facility, so either coming in or
leaving we pull up and pump out both tanks. We don’t know how long we
could go between pump outs, but we don’t want to find out the hard way!
This is a marina
and RV park. Park is their word, not mine. It’s just a regular
parking lot with hook-ups. A couple of RV’s had set up patios, so I guess
they stay here a while.
We biked into town
looking for a local lunch place, but ended up at Subway in a service
station. Ilion is home to Remington Arms, the oldest gunmaker in the
country, so we decided to tour the museum, which was a block behind the
Subway.
The plant is huge,
HUGE! At one time you could tour the factory, but now only the museum is open
to the public. It was interesting, but I know so little about guns that a
lot of it was over my head. I did like the tiny guns and the bicycle,
also made by Remington. And I loved the $5.00 clearance t-shirts!
Pulling out of the
drive way, we saw a school bus unloading. Kids here are still in school!
Late afternoon
thunder shower!
And immediately
after a rainbow.
And sunshine
again.
Again, the shadows
and the clouds were so pretty, I couldn’t resist taking more pictures.
