Friday, June 16 - A Day in Amsterdam - NY!
The weather was
yucky, and we were tired of locks, so decided to stay in Amsterdam until
tomorrow. Last night in the restaurant/office, I picked up a menu
and saw “Championship BBQ sandwich! They said they opened at 11:00 and I
was looking forward to eating a BBQ sandwich for lunch. We walked up
about 1:30, and there were chains with “Closed” signs on them.
There is nothing
around this dock, so we took the elevator and then the pedestrian bridge across
the railroad tracks and the Interstate. All we saw there was the back of
a very large building, with one or two cars in the huge parking lot! No
doors, no signs, but we did see a guy come around a corner with a take-out bag
in his hand. As we rounded that corner, there was an unmarked door so we
took a chance. We entered an empty mall. Seriously, empty.
There were no
people in sight. We stopped a security guy to ask about a place to eat,
and he suggested Fresh Basil outside the far entrance to the mall. We saw
a Chinese restaurant over in a corner, but the cop said Fresh Basil was much
better. Walking the length of the empty mall was rather spooky. There
was an occasional office, but still no people!
Fresh Basil was
good, the waitress went ga-ga over our accent (she was from Florida), then
talked about there being no sweet tea up here, even at McDonald’s.
Back through the
empty mall and to the boat.
Danny kept thinking
about Chinese take-out, so we called to place an order and went back to the
spooky mall to pick it up. This was the only way from our boat to solid
ground.
This time the door
we used earlier was locked, so we had to walk all the way around the
mall. The lady at the restaurant counter told us, in her very broken
English, that we had paid too much, we should have ordered the combo dinner
instead of fried rice. She gave Danny a Pepsi because she felt bad.
We got some good
pics on the way back to the boat.
