Saturday, June 10 - West Point and Hyde Park
The sailboats were
out in force as we were getting ready to leave Half Moon Bay. The Hudson River is
beautiful, it reminds us of the Tennessee River.
The commuter train
tracks run right along the river for miles! Makes for a pretty commute, I
guess.
This house was
built into the stone. I would love to see it up close.
Just before West
Point, we passed what we think was a hotel, and then officer's quarters.
Then West Point
itself. It was so impressive! We would love have taken the tour,
but docking was iffy, and the hills would have been too much for our
hips. (Ain't it fun getting old?)
Just past West
Point is the deepest part of the Hudson River - 174 feet!
The scenery along
this part of the Hudson was spectacular!
This old castle on
an island that had at one time been used for ammunition storage was given to
the state of New York, then it burned two years later.
Since it was
Saturday, there were lots of sailboats out for races. They are so pretty,
but we have to give way to them, so it makes navigating a little harder.
We passed
Poughkeepsie and these two bridges. One was a pedestrian bridge that was
over a mile long. And there were people on it!
The Culinary
Institute of America is right on the river. Some boaters had driven up
from Half Moon Bay and raved about the food. The $100.00 car rental kept
us on our boat, but at least we got to see it from the water.
These houses were
in Hyde Park, but we didn't get to see the most famous houses, the Roosevelt
and Vanderbilt homes. There was not a place to anchor that had
transportation.
We spent the night
at Norrie State Park Marina. It had minimal amenities, but the price was
right!
And the scenery was
spectacular.
