Tuesday, June 13 - AVIA Wine!
For some random
reason, I was up early and we headed out with Sonny and Phyllis and the early
group. On to Waterford!
We passed some
parts of the Hudson that are industrial, but there aren't many. These
were in Schodack Landing. That's really the name.
There are not many
marinas on this section of the Hudson, mostly boat clubs.
This lovely home
deserved a picture!
We passed through
Albany. Danny said they could take a lesson from Knoxville's waterfront
development. Lots of highways, not much parkways.
The next town we
passed was Troy, which had some lovely homes along the waterfront.
Just past Troy, we
came to the beginning of the Erie Canal.
We had been
following Sonny and Phyllis all day, and they led us into the Waterford City Marina,
which really is a town wall with water and electricity ($10.00 per day).
The first spot we tried would not work with our electrical set-up, so we went
to the other end and it worked!
There was a grocery
store just across the bridge in North Troy, so we biked over to
re-provision. We managed to pack $90.00 worth of groceries into one
backpack, 2 bike baskets, and one crate. My Dad would be so proud of us!
Grocery stores here
don't sell wine, so after unloading our groceries, we headed to the wine store
in the opposite direction. The maintenance guy at the marina had
suggested we take the bike path which followed the Old Champlain Canal Towpath.
This house was
right next to the canal, I'm guessing it was original.
We found the wine
store, and as I was looking, Danny asked the clerk if he carried Avia wine, my
favorite from our days in Washington when I would buy it for $1.79 at Central
Liquor in downtown DC. I have found it infrequently, once in Texas (thanks,
John) and once in Charleston, SC, but nowhere recently. I was so
excited! We bought all we could carry on my bike and backpack, then crossed the street to buy Milwaukee's Best Light at a bargain price. Danny was happy!
Crossing the bridge going back via the highway, we saw these old stone structures, and the lock to the west
And back at the
marina
Enjoying my Avia
wine! Thanks, Danny.
