Wednesday, August 9 - Big Ships
We cruised a grand
total of 10 miles this morning! Our reservation at Mackinac Island is for
Sunday, so we have several days for leisurely cruising.
As we approached De
Tour Village, this ship passed in front of us. We chose the marina at De
Tour because it was on the shopping channel. We have a “thing” for cargo
ships.
The marina is very
nice, but almost empty. We gassed up, pumped out, bought ice, and chose
our slip. (There were lots to choose from).
We had been eating on the boat for several days, so we took advantage of being ashore to get lunch.
After lunch, we
biked to the hardware store. Deb and I checked out the cute shop across
the street. It had a coffee house in the garden behind the shop. I
loved the fence!
Our first US
grocery store! Not a big store, but it had what we needed, even Bush’s
Grilling Beans. We haven’t been able to find them anywhere in
Canada.
Danny was excited
because beer is half the price it was in Canada. The girl at the dock has
said the wine selection would be better at the grocery store than at the Shell
section. Here is the liquor and wine selection!
Quite a few large
ships passed by when we first pulled in, but not so many when I was sitting on
the back of the boat, ready to take pictures.
Our very first
Looper friends, Carol and Jim on Way 2 Much, sent a message to see if we could
meet for breakfast. They are at Drummond Island, headed for Mackinac
tomorrow. The next message was that they wouldn’t be able to stop
because of the rain forecast, then the next message said for us to ride the
ferry over to Drummond and they would pick us up to go to dinner. Danny’s
back has been worse than the usual bad, so we had to decline. We haven’t
seen them since St. Augustine, so it would have been so nice to catch up.
Maybe down the river.
Danny picked out an anchorage for tomorrow night but the weather forecast looks wet and windy. We will decide in the morning.
