Thursday, February 2 - Manatee Sighting
Another beautiful day for cruising! Calm seas, sunshine, mild temperature.
Danny was concerned about having enough gas to get to Key Largo. Most Loopers cross to Marathan, so we couldn't get a good estimate of how many cruising miles we had left. The ONLY place to get gas between Everglades City and the Keys is in our Flamingo, FL at the Everglades National Park dock and campground. Flamingo didn't show up on Google maps, the gas dock didn't answer the phone or respond to the VHF radio. Our cruise book had warned that the entrance was very shallow, and they were right! We made it with a foot to spare.
Two nice young men were working at the dock and helped us get started. After a few minutes, Danny said, "This gas isn't really $5.00 per gallon is it?" The response, "Yes, Sir."
So we got 20 gallons and left.
We cruised across Florida Bay all day. We could barely see land, except at Flamingo, and the islands looked like stepping stones in the far distance.
The Gulf is so shallow here that we can't get close to an island to anchor for the night. So we stopped in the middle of the water..
Danny fished a little, but his big "catch" was a glimpse of a manatee right by our boat, the first sighting of our trip. Neither of us had a camera, but he didn't stay long enough to take a picture anyway.
We saw only a few boats all day, this sailboat against the sunset was one of them.
