Sunday, February 5 - Exploring Marathon

Sunday, February 5 - Exploring Marathon

A request at the office for breakfast recommendations got us several.  When they got to "hole in the wall Cuban restaurant where all the guys around here eat," we knew where we were headed.  Thank goodness we had the bikes, it's several long blocks to even get to a real road.  La Nina was just what we expected, window air conditioner unit and all.  The shrimp omelettes were great, and the huge slabs of toasted Cuban bread were terrific!  Can't wait to go back for a sandwich.

Of course we needed a couple of things from West Marine, so biked on down there.  We had lost our  American flag somehow, and Danny had confiscated one of the rope holders that I use to take up and let down the fenders.  I have enough trouble with those lines with all equipment in good working order, I definitely do not want to attempt tying knots on the move on a bouncing boat.  Now I have one for every fender line again.

We kept riding up-island, but there really isn't much to see on this island.  You don't see the beach from any point on US 1, just a glimpse of the water once in a while.  The stores and businesses are not attractive, and the houses and trailers are mostly junky and scrubby.  (I think that's a word.). I will take pictures tomorrow..

There is a Blue Green Vacation resort here, so we stopped by to check on day use facilities, specifically the pool.  As we were walking around, this iguana startled us.  I didn't realize they were so big.  He wasn't afraid of us at all.

The jet ski rental place adjoining the resort had lots of brown weeds, or grass, or something floating on the water.  Notice how much is on the boat motor.  Wouldn't rent a jet ski there for sure.  It reminds me too much of moss at Lake Blackshear.

When we got back to the boat, Danny got all the lines straight and attached to the holders.  I don't know how he knows all this boat stuff, but I surely am glad he does.

Danny's adult beverage stock is getting low, and this IS SuperBowl Sunday, so we called a taxi and headed for Publix.  Any ride on the island is $5.00 which is a pretty good deal.

One more exploration before the ball game, a dinghy ride.  We have seen so many boats and dinghies go up the little canal at the end of this dock, we needed to check it out.  All we found were more junky houses, actually travel trailers made into residences, commercial fishing boats, and one restaurant.  We also checked out the marina to our south, it had some beautiful boats.

Time for the ball game, some pizza, and disappointment.  I was pulling for Atlanta because my Daddy would have loved it!
