The main reason we pulled in at Marathon was to have the electric windlass repaired. Pulling up the anchor by hand is way too much work. Danny started calling repair folks at 8:01. Nobody called back, so we headed out on the bikes for breakfast. Lots of restaurants serve breakfast in Marathon, we chose 7 Mile Grill with outdoor seating and it was very good.
Marathon has been a disappointment. We expected a pretty, tropical area. Instead, it has been pretty scruffy. I took pictures today to show you.
The marina next to us, Burdine's, has lots of live-aboards and there are tiki huts at the end of many of the slips. We stopped to take pictures of some of them.
There were also live-aboards at Poncho's marina, where we were staying, and they were even more scruffy than the tiki huts. Everything that won't fit on the boat gets piled on the walkway at the end of the boat. Quite a sight.
Since I was taking pictures of scenic Marathon, I took more pictures on the way to La Nina for my Cuban sandwich. Roosters were crowing all along this road.
Then this was the view from US 1 looking down into the neighborhood. It was sad, and so different than what we had expected.
The repair guy came and fixed the windlass. Once again, we are ready to go.
Marathon is certainly a "scruffy little city" (that was once said about Knoxville, but that person had obviously never seen Marathon). We have found some charm there, but it certainly doesn't fit the general preconceived notions of what "The Keys" should look like :)
