Saturday, February 11 - Goodbye to Key West
Before I leave Key West with my narrative, I have to talk about the dinghy docks at our marina. There are probably hundreds of boats at anchor around Key West and they all have to have a dinghy to get to shore. The problem is, there are very few places to land in your dinghy, the shore is taken up with docks and sea walls. For $85.00 a month, you can have use of the dinghy dock at Key West Bight Marina.
You also get use of the showers and laundry facilities and a weekly at-boat pump out. It's the only marina that accommodates dinghies, so it is packed. We observed "bumper dinghies" several times while we were there. And there was a steady stream of dinghies going in and out beside our boat, night and day. Oh, and you have to prove that your big boat has been pumped out each week to retain use. It's a different world, folks.
So we bid good bye to Key West. To the crowded and fascinating bight:
To the cruise ships:
To the many, many anchored boats:
To the crazy zig-zag channel out to deep water:
To the low-tide beach:
And on out to the channel.
It really is a channel, just so shallow that it looks like land.
We anchored for the night out in the middle of the Gulf. Sunset and full moon were beautiful!
