Friday, January 20 - Sightseeing in Ft. Myers

Today was tourist day!  Our plans were to ride the trolley down the island and back, then go into Ft. Myers itself to see the Edison House and the riverfront.  This is definitely a beach town, with colorful buildings and lots of tourists!
A couple at the trolley stop recommended The Salty Crab for breakfast, so we started our tour there.  Cute little beachfront bar and grill, and the crab omelette was awesome!

Our next stop was the Chamber of Commerce to get trolley and bus information.  The lady was not familiar with either system, but we took a schedule and headed off.  The main street was being reworked, so traffic was slow and we waited a long time for a trolley.
Estero Island, home of Ft. Myers Beach, is a long skinny island, and there wasn't anything of significance to see, just condos, big houses, little houses, and shopping centers.  We did get off the trolley to walk to  the Mound House, a museum and archeology site focused on the Calusa Indians.
The grounds were very pretty, and most plants were labeled.
Of course, we had to read every label.  My camera died so the pictures are limited.

We thought this was a banyan tree, but it's really a Strangler Fig.  It was huge, and a little creepy.

This tree was named Gumbp Limbo, the Tourist Tree, because it looks like sunburned skin peeling.  Did the natives get sunburned?

Between the museum and the trolley stop we saw this palm tree, a new one to us.  You know how I love palm trees!
We got off one trolley, onto another for the ride across the bridge to the bus stop.  We had asked so many times, and heard so many numbers, that we were totally confused.  Finally, we thought we were on the bus to town.  The route wound around through some interesting areas,  there were TWO more transfers, then we had to walk or take another bus to catch the River Trolley, our original destination.  It was so late, we just crossed the lane and got on the bus going back to the beach.  So this is what we saw of Ft. Myers.
We timed the trip back to the island - 1 hour 20 minutes, just on the bus!

As we  made the home loop on the trolley on the island, the sun was setting.  Lots of people were carrying lawn chairs to go watch the sunset.   As the trolley passed by the condo buildings, you could look between buildings and see people standing on the beach.  Everything focuses on the sunset!

It was almost dark for our dinghy ride back to the boat.  I had Danny's phone ready on flashlight mode in case a boat was headed for us!  We were ready for a cold one when we got back to the boat!!!
